Friends who plan to attend Quarterly Meeting on November 4th may wish to contribute to Prison Families of New York by bringing items from the following list:

Good paperbacks for ages 8-18;
packets of crayons;
coloring/activities books for children under 7;
baby wipes, disposable diapers and clothing for infants;
mini-size toiletries (for $1.00 at K-Mart, CVS, etc.), tooth brushes for mothers and teenagers.

Substantial clothing of good quality and in clean condition, including jackets, boots, hats and mittens/gloves. (Thrift shops are a good source of these items. Wool and fleece garments are preferable to polyester.)

Alison and Cecily Coleman will have room in their car for boxes and bags to take back and save donors the expense of mailing. If there is an overflow, Housatonic will ship it.

Documentary film about the hopeful birth and untimely death of the electric car: environmentally friendly, cost-saving salvation to some, profit barrier to others.

Launched in 1996 by General Motors, it was among the fastest, most efficient production cars ever built. It ran on electricity, produced no emissions and catapulted American technology to the forefront of the automotive industry. The lucky few who drove it never wanted to give it up. So why did General Motors crush its fleet of EV1 electric vehicles in the Arizona desert in 2002?

Sunday, April 29
3:00-5:00 PM
Quaker Meetinghouse, New Milford

Film showing followed by discussion

Part II of the documentary film “A Force More Powerful” will be shown at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 15, at the Housatonic Quaker Meetinghouse in New Milford, at Route 7 and Lanesville Road (just north of Lanesville Rd intersection). All are welcome and there is no charge. Refreshments and discussion will follow. The program will conclude at 5:00 pm.

Thus is the second segment of a two-part documentary that explores one of the 20th century’s least understood stories – the history of nonviolent conflict power around the world and how it overcame oppression and authoritarian rule. Its power came not from the barrel of a gun, but from discipline and shrewd tactical planning. Premiered on PBS in 2000. Narrated by Ben Kingsley. The film is “rich in archival footage and thoughtful interviews … The stories are inspiring, sometimes awesome.” (Washington Post)

There are three stories: 1) in 1984 a young activist leads a consumer boycott against apartheid in white-owned businesses in the black townships of South Africa; 2) during five years of Nazi occupation, Danes’ noncooperation undermines the Germans’ attempt to exploit their country for food and war materiel, and rescues all but a few hundred of seven thousand Jews from the Nazis; and 3) the 1980 Gdansk strike wins Poles the right to free trade unions, launches the Solidarity movement, and catapults founder Lech Walesa into national leadership.

The Housatonic Quaker Meeting is sponsoring this film program to foster the understanding that nonviolent strategies have been used effectively in the past to bring about important changes. With violent conflict in so many parts of the world today, it is imperative to consider more peaceful means of bringing justice to the oppressed.

Parking will be available at the Red Barn just south of the meetinghouse. For more information, call Bill Holcombe at 203-313-4438

Dear Friends,

Last First Day, April 30, we held our pilot project film showing and discussion. The films were powerful , the discussions lively, and the refreshments delicious. Eight people from the communities of Danbury, New Milford, Woodbury, Morris, and Washington Depot attended as well as 8 HMM Friends.

We feel the day was a success even though we might have wished for more people from the community – but this is a beginning. All the visitors were very appreciative of the films and discussions, offered much positive feedback, and are interested in attending our next film showing.

Thanks to everyone who helped with preparations, publicity, and film day tasks, especially Laura, Ann, Craig, and Bill.

Ideas for future films (and their sources) are welcomed.
