Managing Attorney, Immigrant Rights Program, NYMRO
American Friends Service Committee/ New York Metropolitan Office (AFSC/NYMRO) seeks a Managing Attorney to supervise the legal work of staff attorneys, legal assistants, and law student interns; to provide legal immigration counseling to low-income, legal and undocumented immigrants and refugees and represent AFSC’s clients before the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service and the Immigration Court; to assure community legal education, organize immigration law and immigrants’ rights trainings, advocate on policy issues, and respond to inquiries from immigrant service providers.
AFSC is a Quaker non-profit organization working worldwide for social justice and peace. The New York Metropolitan Immigrant Rights Program, based in Newark, New Jersey provides community organizing and leadership training, direct legal services, and outreach and education to immigrant communities and the general public.
Qualifications include JD, Bar Admission; proven ability to supervise staff attorneys, legal assistants, and law student interns; extensive experience with immigration law and procedures, especially political asylum and battered spouse self-petitions and deportation defense; familiarity with software applications in a Windows environment, including Microsoft Word and Immigrant Pro; Spanish fluency; strong written and oral communication skills; able to conduct group presentations; able to communicate effectively and build mutually respectful relationships with co-workers, clients, and the public. The candidate must be self-motivated, detail oriented, well-organized, able to prioritize assignments and work load; willing to travel, and able to work occasional weekends and evenings; able to manage demanding workload, including deadlines, while remaining sensitive to the needs of clients; able to work effectively and comfortably with Quaker principles.
